Goku and Vegeta vs. Broly in Dragon Ball Super: Broly explained

In the world of Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball, battles between powerful warriors shape the fate of the universe. One such iconic battle unfolds in the 2018 film Dragon Ball Super: Broly, where Goku and Vegeta, two of the series’ central characters, face off against Broly, a legendary Super Saiyan with unmatched power and rage.

Background

Both Saiyans, Goku and Vegeta initially start as enemies but later become allies in the series. Over the years, through intense training and battles, they achieved multiple transformations, including Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan God, and Super Saiyan Blue.

Broly, on the other hand, is introduced in the movie as another Saiyan survivor. Still, unlike Goku and Vegeta, he has a unique potential that allows him to access the overwhelming power of the legendary Super Saiyan.

His enormous strength is mostly untapped and uncontrolled, making him a dangerous force. Broly’s backstory in this film differs from his initial appearance in earlier non-canonical movies.

In this version, he is exiled from Planet Vegeta as a baby due to his immense potential, and he grows up on a desolate planet with his father, Paragus, harboring a grudge against King Vegeta and his lineage.

The Conflict

The story begins with the discovery of the Dragon Balls by Frieza. His army recruits Broly and Paragus, setting the stage for a confrontation between the Saiyan warriors and Frieza’s forces.

When Goku and Vegeta encounter the new Saiyan, the raw intensity of his power becomes evident. Initially, he fights in his base form, gradually getting stronger as the battle progresses. Maliciously, Frieza kills his father and blames it on the Saiyans to unleash Broly’s rage.

This adaptation emphasizes the idea that he isn’t inherently evil but is driven by his father’s revenge and the overwhelming force of his power.

The Battle Begins

Goku starts the fight, transitioning from his base form to Super Saiyan and then to Super Saiyan God. But even the godly power seems insufficient against the new Saiyan’s relentless onslaught.

Vegeta takes over, showcasing his transformations, culminating in the Super Saiyan Blue form. Yet, Broly continues to adapt and grow stronger with every passing second.

The duo then tries to take on him together. Despite their combined efforts, his evolution into his Super Saiyan form makes him an unstoppable force.

Recognizing Broly’s overwhelming strength, Goku and Vegeta resort to a last-ditch strategy — the Fusion Dance. This technique combines their powers and bodies into a single entity known as Gogeta.

After a couple of failed attempts (which offer comedic relief), Goku and Vegeta successfully fuse to become Gogeta, a warrior with combined powers and skills.

Gogeta and Broly’s battle shakes the very fabric of reality, showcasing dazzling visuals and breathtaking action sequences. The fight takes them from Earth to another dimension and back. While Broly’s power is immense, Gogeta’s combined skills, intelligence, and strength give him an edge.

Resolution

Before a final blow can be struck, Cheelai, a character who befriends Broly, uses the Dragon Balls to wish him back to his home planet, thus saving him from potential defeat or death.

This act ends the battle and hints at Broly’s redemption and possible future alliances. Dragon Ball Super: Broly presents a reimagined backstory for the character, making him a more sympathetic character compared to previous incarnations.
