The Attack Titan in Attack on Titan explained

The Attack Titan is one of the most prominent powers among the Nine Titans in Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan. The original Japanese title of the show, Shingeki no Kyojin, literally translates to The Attack Titan. However, the English title was changed by Isayama due to its catchiness.

Controlled by the show’s protagonist Eren Jaeger, the Attack Titan is a powerful Titan and a central figure in the show’s complex narrative. Here’s a breakdown of all its abilities.

Appearance and Combat

The Attack Titan stands around 15 meters tall, with a muscular and athletic build, allowing for agility and combat prowess.

Its appearance is characterized by its pronounced jawline, lean musculature, and piercing eyes. It has a fierce and aggressive stance, reflecting its nature and purpose.

Determination and Persistence

While every Titan possesses unique abilities, the Attack Titan is particularly renowned for its embodiment of freedom and determination. It has a strong desire to break free from any form of oppression, which manifests in the form of relentless persistence in battle.

This spirit of freedom is passed down to each inheritor, who invariably takes on this strong will and drive.

Advanced Regeneration

All Titans have the ability to regenerate, but the Attack Titan has shown a remarkable capacity to do so at an accelerated rate, particularly under extreme conditions.

This quick healing ability, combined with its inherent persistence, makes the Attack Titan a formidable force on the battlefield.

Future Memory Inheritance

One of the most mysterious and pivotal abilities of this Titan is the power to inherit memories from both past and future inheritors. While many Titans can access memories from previous inheritors, the Attack Titan’s ability to glimpse into the future is unique.

This power doesn’t grant a clear vision of the future, but fragments of memories, which play a crucial role in shaping decisions and events in the series.

Like several other Titans, this Titan can use the hardening ability. This allows parts of its body to become hardened, effectively turning these parts into weapons or shields.

The versatility of this power can be seen when Eren Jaeger uses hardening to seal the breached wall or to enhance his combat capabilities.

Limitations and Weaknesses

Despite its formidable capabilities, the Titan has its limitations. Its determination and aggressive nature can sometimes lead it into situations where it’s outnumbered or outmaneuvered.

Moreover, while memory inheritance provides crucial insights, they are often fragmented and not fully understood, leading to potential misinterpretations.

Additionally, as with every other Titan, the nape remains a dreaded weak point.

Narrative Importance

The Attack Titan is central to the show’s narrative. Its spirit of freedom and resistance against oppression are the building blocks of the narrative. We see three people using this Titan in the series: Eren Kruger, Grisha Jaeger, and Eren Jaeger.

Eren’s inheritance of this Titan and his subsequent journey of understanding its powers and memories become the driving force of the story.

The Attack Titan, with its indomitable will, unique memory inheritance, and combat prowess, is a symbol of resistance and the relentless pursuit of freedom in the series.
