The sophomore season of Jujutsu Kaisen takes a turn for the worst as the Shibuya Incident arc leaves the world of sorcerers and non-sorcerers with an indelible mark.
Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 begins with the Hidden Inventory arc that delves into Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto’s past, as they went from being best friends to enemies.
In 2006, Gojo and Geto must escort the Star Plasma Vessel to Master Tengen while contending with curse user groups who target them.
One of these curse user groups hires Toji Fushiguro to assassinate the Star Plasma Vessel, Riko. He lacks cursed energy entirely and the heavenly restriction has rewarded him with superhuman strength.
He uses it to kill Gojo but the latter uses the Reverse Cursed Technique to come back alive, and this time, he awakens immense powers within him, before disposing of Toji.
In the following year, he becomes more isolated and the strongest sorcerer, while Geto, depressed out of his mind, loses track of his purpose and develops an intense hatred for non-sorcerers.
This puts him at odds with Gojo but he can’t kill his friend so someone else does. In the present, Pseudo-Geto and Mahito begin their plan that they carry out in Shibuya.
A barrier is created and several veils keep sorcerers divided and separated from each other. Gojo arrives at the rescue of non-sorcerers and finds himself challenged by his enemies using the worst measures to defeat him.
He’s eventually trapped by Pseudo-Geto’s prison realm. Meanwhile, a flurry of cursed spirits and users attack the Jujutsu sorcerers, who try their best to rescue Gojo as well as prevent more loss of lives.
Many sorcerers lose their lives, including major names such as Nanami, and Nobara (who is as good as dead).
Meanwhile, Jogo successfully summons Sukuna but the latter forces the cursed spirit to a match and incinerates him, along with a vast stretch of the cityscape.
Mahito is taken down by Yuji, who is helped tremendously by Todo. However, Pseudo-Geto, who is actually Kenjaku, absorbs Mahito.
Special Grade sorcerer Yuki Tsukumo arrives to lend a hand to Yuji and fellow sorcerers. Kenjaku unleashes uncountable cursed spirits before he bails.
The aftermath sees a Tokyo ingested with cursed spirits with a gaping hole. The authorities are forced to disclose the existence of cursed spirits.
Yuta Okkotsu returns and agrees to be the executioner of Yuji Itadori, as Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 ends.
Those who fell
Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 exacts a heavy toll, subtracting from the world of sorcery some major cursed spirits and sorcerers in the most destructive arc in the anime thus far.
Gojo sensei has been trapped inside the Prison Realm by Kenjaku, with even his incredible might falling short of being able to break out of the diabolical contraption.
Nanami is gone. While he could never see his Malaysian dreams be realized, he did leave his other dreams to live on in the hearts of the young ones like Yuji.
Toji Zenin, stubborn as he was even in the afterlife, gave up on a second chance at life in a new host’s body, after he confirmed his son turned out fine without him, which was enough for him.
Nobara’s fate lies in the most precarious of balances, as there’s very little hope that she survives and lives on to see another day with half her face gone.
Mahito finally meets a fitting, if not cathartic, end. He mewls during his last moments facing the blank-faced and dead-eyed of a sentinel he made out of a traumatized Yuji.
Before Itadori can punch his vengeance in, Kenjaku arrives and absorbs Mahito, in turn coming into the possession of an even greater cursed technique in his unfathomable arsenal.
Kokichi Muta exerts the last great effort of his life against Mahito, pouring almost every ounce of his energy into an ingenious attack.
Mahito reigned supreme at the end, but Muta helped his fellow Jujutsu sorcerers with the remnants of his soul and energy after his death.
Hanami fell when Gojo flexed his power at the Shibuya subway, crushing the curse in a brutal, quick attack.
Toji being brought back to life via Seance proved to be the worst news for Dagon, who couldn’t keep up with the re-awakened warrior.
Jogo went up against Sukuna after trying to bring him back by feeding Yuji ten of his fingers.
Sukuna incinerated the curse after a devastating battle, where Sukuna didn’t sweat at all but acknowledged Jogo.
Naobito Zenin went up against Dagon and fought valiantly, receiving multiple grave injuries. It was after the battle that he succumbed to those injuries and died.
Kenjaku unleashes hell
Kenjaku emerges as the biggest threat in Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, especially by the time it comes to its conclusion.
After having captured Gojo and absorbed Mahito, he faces Yuji and his friends, along with a reformed Choso and Yuki Tsukumo.
He shares how he wants to see the curse energy be optimized and evolved further, rather than see a world without it — something that Yuji prefers.
She argues such an endeavor would lead to a world that’s turned on Japan since it will have the monopoly on cursed energy.
This would further lead to unfathomable bloodshed as other countries would use humans as energy sources.
Kenjaku doesn’t care a lick, though, as he only prefers to watch the evolution of Jujutsu sorcerers and cursed spirits into something more.
To bring about that evolution, he believes unmanageable chaos is required.
He’s made plans for such chaos and now he can set these plans into motion. Before this point, he had marked two categories of non-sorcerers across the country.
The first type is those who can awaken cursed techniques even though their brains are not of sorcerers.
The second type is the non-sorcerers who have ingested cursed items.
Using Idle Transfiguration, he releases these marked non-sorcerers upon each other, to fight each other and create immense chaos.
To ensure this anarchical reality does come about, the cursed items he had these marked non-sorcerers ingest all belonged to powerful sorcerers he had made binding vows with long long ago.
His contract with them is already null by now but these sorcerers would be more than willing to wreak unimaginable chaos and bloodshed.
Before bailing, Kenjaku releases an incredible amount of cursed spirits that spread across the city.
A large part of the vicinity is destroyed completely, and an even larger part of the city is enveloped in the cursed spirits that Kenjaku unleashes.
The ruins sitting silently in the darkness caused by the electrical blackout paint a horror picture the people can’t believe is real, even as they see it on their TV sets with their eyes.
Several types of power vacuums are created in the aftermath of the Shibuya Incident, both in the world of Jujutsu sorcery and in the political world as well.
The blackout is massive and leaves them vulnerable to military invasions as well. The economy takes a hit and the Yen depreciates heavily.
Meanwhile, the higher-ups decide it is time to disclose the existence of cursed spirits and tell the public that they only appear in Tokyo.
This is so that the cursed energy emitted by people is drawn towards Tokyo, which in turn keeps the cursed spirits limited to the city.
Jujutsu headquarters & Yuta returns
An orphaned girl is about to be devoured by a large cursed spirit but is saved by Yuta Okkotsu as he makes quick work of the entity.
He has finally returned to Japan and Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 finale shortly delves into the events at the Jujutsu Headquarters prior to his return to the battlefield.
There’s a shakeup at the headquarters and the higher-ups can finally do as they please since the great disturbance in the balance — Satoru Gojo is sealed within the prison realm.
A notice from the headquarters is issued and according to it, Geto is listed as alive and sentenced to death again.
Gojo is listed as a co-conspirator in the Shibuya Incident and permanently banished from the realm of sorcery. Not only that but unsealing him will be considered a criminal act.
Masamichi Gaga is accused of instigating Gojo and Geto in the Shibuya Incident and is therefore sentenced to death.
The Jujutsu Headquarters revokes the suspension of Yuji Itadori’s death. The execution must be carried out promptly.
Finally, Special Grade sorcerer Yuta Okkotsu is tasked with the execution of Yuji Itadori, and he agrees to it with a binding vow.
He tells the higher-ups that he will execute Yuji because he cut off his dear friend Inumaki’s arm, and he doesn’t care if he’s Gojo sensei’s student.
