Kugisaki Nobara suffered a shocking fate in the latest episode of Jujutsu Kaisen. With half a face and no pulse, will she ever be able to defy the bleak odds and join Yuji and Fushiguro on another mission?
Jujutsu Kaisen doesn’t shy away from major character deaths and so when Kugisaki seemed to contend with her mortality all of a sudden, questions arose about whether she’s gone for good or not.
Taken by surprise
Nobara fights the clone of Mahito, while the main body fights Yuji. His plan to throw Yuji off and make him despair more involves showing him a dead Nobara.
However, he takes her lightly, and Nobara manages to overwhelm him with her skills and battle IQ. That’s when the clone bolts and eventually runs past the main body.
Nobara registers this development only after the main Mahito, one who is capable of activating his Idle Transfiguration, unlike his clone, gets to her. He promptly touches the left side of her face.
It gets blown off and she falls on the floor at the subway with a chilling thud. Yuji is distraught and traumatized, as Nobara lies still, seemingly lifeless.
A bandaid for death
Later on in episode 20 of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, Todo and Arata Nitta arrive to lend assistance to Yuji. Todo takes care of Mahito, pushing him away, while Nitta performs first aid on Yuji and Nobara.
He later says that he’s performed his jujutsu treatment on her but her pulse rate is nil, as is her heartbeat.
There’s a very very slim chance that she makes it out alive.
As he rushes to pick up Nobara and carry her out to safety, he tells Yuji to not have his hopes up regarding her fate, as it seems just about definitive.
The hope in ambiguities
Jujutsu Kaisen is rife with bloodshed and death aplenty. It is very consistent with how frequently and permanently it retires its characters, both supporting and main.
However, it deals with preternatural concepts like sorcery and curses, and often characters seem to spring up from their deaths.
When one deals with such concepts and potentials for rebirth, there’s a never-say-never that can be invoked whenever the question of someone remaining dead surfaces.
There are many ambiguities surrounding Nobara’s fate in the manga which leaves way for a real possibility that she may be brought back to life down the line.
