What did Eren see when he kissed Historia’s hand in Attack on Titan?

The world of Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) is brimming with mysteries, conspiracies, and twists that keep the audience guessing.

One pivotal moment that sent shockwaves through the fandom was when Eren Jaeager, the protagonist, experienced sudden and intense visions upon kissing Historia Reiss’s hand during an award ceremony.

His Founding Titan awakened upon coming in contact with someone possessing Royal Blood, which led to unimaginable revelations.

Memories Transcend Time

In Attack on Titan, specific Titan shifters possess the ability to inherit the memories of their predecessors.

The Attack Titan, in particular, can even foresee certain future events as it can access the memories of future wielders. Eren, as the holder of the Attack Titan, is susceptible to these memory surges if he comes in contact with Royal Blood.

A Grim Future

Therefore, when Eren kissed Historia’s hand, he saw visions that offered a fragmented look into the future, hinting at events that were yet to transpire in the storyline.

This ability of the Attack Titan to see glimpses of its future successors made Eren witness the memories of an elder version of him through his father’s eyes.

It is at this point that he knew he was going to initiate the rumbling and flatten the world. Eren confirms this is season 4 when Zeke travels with him into Grisha’s memories in the paths.

Which is also why he was able to carry out this plan in the first place.

Grisha’s Perspective

The fragments from Grisha’s past provided Eren with a broader perspective of the motives behind his actions, including the reasons his father infiltrated the walls and his interactions with the Reiss family.

It became clear that it was adult Eren who instigated Grisha to kill the Reiss family to ensure that his younger self got the Founding Titan’s power.

These memories blurred the lines between the past, present, and future, creating a narrative jigsaw that Eren (and the audience) had to piece together.

A Catalyst for Change

These visions were not just fleeting images for Eren as they became instrumental in shaping his decisions in the present.

After gaining these insights, Eren’s demeanor began to shift, reflecting a deeper internal turmoil and a change in his perspective toward the world outside the walls. He was constantly dealing with the guilt of his actions that he had yet to carry out.

Eren and Historia

Apart from the memories, the incident also deepened the bond between Eren and Historia. Their shared experience of inheriting memories and the weight of their ancestors’ legacies made their connection unique.

Eren’s visions served as an entry point to many subsequent events, with Historia’s bloodline playing an essential role in it.
